Our Philosphy

Windsurfing is about fun, freedom, grace and speed… not necessarily in that order. But to fully achieve any of those things, at least for us at HPL, the gear has to be just right… that means not just passable; it means great.

The name Hawaiian Pro Line is appropriate because our pro riders relentlessly test every component we make, and they do it on Maui’s North Shore. If a piece of gear is made light and responsive enough to encourage cutting edge tricks, huge airs and “sick” wave riding while also handling the inevitable pounding of a mast-high Hookipa session, then it is worthy of the HPL logo, and can pretty much handle anything that the elements can dish out anywhere in the world.

Grab a Hawaiian Pro Line boom and look at the care and precision that’s gone into it. Feel the balance and swing weight. Feel the solidity yet lightness. We live to windsurf. We love and respect this sport, and we believe that that spirit comes through in everything we build.

Hawaiian Pro Line was founded by windsurfing pioneer Keith Baxter in the late 1980’s upon his leaving Fleetwood Windsurfing Hardware Company to return to his home in Hawaii. Keith began by building custom booms for speed sailors and soon had 12 employees making 5000 custom sets of booms a year for clientele that included virtually every pro windsurfer. One of HPL’s major innovations during this time was asymmetrical booms (and booms with custom graphics evolved when Keith couldn’t find enough boom wrap on Maui to finish an order and wrapped the remaining booms with a patchwork of multicolored scraps.

HPL became a division MacLean Quality Composites, a Salt Lake City-based engineering and manufacturing firm in the mid 1990’s. At the helm of the HPL business is former world champion windsurfer and clinician Cort Larned. Larned, who also runs the Powerex mast company, combined his racing and teaching experience with the vast engineering resources and expertise of MacLean to bring HPL products to a whole new level of precision and dependability.
